It reminded me of a case on reddit (on the tall women sub or something) of a 5'7.5 guy who claimed 6'0 and challenged his girlfriend's friend (who was 5'11.5) to measure , as he claimed she was 6' 2.5-6'3, and when he found out he was in shock.

It's 4.5 inches for a man of average height for the whole world. Taller guys are going to have a bigger eye level on average and shorter guys are going to have a smaller eye level. Guys who are around 6ft have an eye level of around 4.75 inches, which Rob confirmed.

I think my eye level is about 5 inches

Height inflation in Germany :D I had a funny situation. Had a conversation with people and 1 guy said he is about 182cm while he was shorter than the woman he was talking with. She is 175cm (she said and yeah she is) and the guy probably 172cm but he still said 182cm.
I was standing next to him and know it was a lie (I am about 189cm). He even said to the girl ''No you are not, you must be taller about 185cm. I swear I am 182cm''. She said ''ok lets say you are 182cm''. He said ''With shoes though''.

How can you dare to add 10cm (4 inches) to your height? Its even in his ID ! I don't get it.

I was like: How tall am I then? 2 meter or what?

Plus I never said I know or do not know the disadvantages of extreme height at a personal level . It's pretty much common knowledge what issues will be encountered. I don't need to be that specific height...
I knew a few people in my life who were 6'4-6'6 range who mentioned their challenges.

I had a 6'2-6'2.5 friend and even he had his fair share of issues.
Obviously being an extreme height such as yourself is really the only way to experience the challenges firsthand...

@Jackie Lee: It's not what I "believe". It's what the advocacy group claims. I BELIEVE that dwarf height starts at 4'8 for younger white American women and 5'0 for younger white American men. It varies for other groups.

@Avi most places I find just a few 6'3-6'4 guys out and barely any taller. It depends though somedays the average seems higher in some small areas(5'9-5'10 here in Canada I think), and there are more very tall guys out. Height really drops off after 6'4. 6'1-6'2 is the common tall guy, taller than many but gets used to not being the tallest in a room

And I am a solid/legit 5’9.5 at my typical low. In fact i measured 176.7 cm after coming home from school + i was already awake for 8.5 hours or so.

So your low is basically 179.9 cm now, wow. Isn't it cool to be just a tiny bit underneath 180, but being bang on 179.9 cm. (-;;;;;

my low is 180.1 or 2 cm at night, just over 5'10 7/8. The good thing about being basically 5'11 at night is that you can feel tallish at any time of the day.

There are a lot of people who see disadvantage at 5'11 and I just say "ok"
6'6 is a good height, I think the right word is that 6'6 is an "unusual" tall and not "abnormal".
If I was 6'6 the only problem would be if I was an ectomorph as being tall and thin is a bit tricky.

6'3 or 6'4 is like the last normal tall.

6'3 is common enough to encounter even with smaller sized crowds
For example going to the mall even with a small amount of people present seems there always a 6'3 even 6'4 guy at times

The bottom line is that I know what your height is like since I've been that height before, but you have absolutely no idea what my height is like. Don't pretend you know the disadvantages and advantages when you've never experienced being over 6'5 before, let alone over 6'0. That's all I have to say.

Believe what you want but I am not going to change my mind. If 4'10 is all it takes to be a dwarf then lots of women are dwarves. I rarely see a legit dwarf in my life. I would consider Simone biles to be very short but not a dwarf.

It depends, because some humans have a low and a high eye level, but if we look far from that, then you might have a very average eye level, so I think your evening low-height is 177 cm, or 5’9.69.

@Jackie Lee: That's not MY opinion on the start of dwarfism. That definition comes from a professional advocacy group for "little people". There are two general types of dwarfism. That's dwarfs who are proportional and dwarfs who aren't proportional. Not all dwarfs are disproportional. Proportional dwarfs once were called midgets, but that term became akin to an insult or a slur. Personally, I don't agree with their definition for a variety of reasons. I think that for white younger Americans, it might start at 4'8 for females while it might start at 5'0 for males (four inch gender gap).

Ariana Grande is taller than 4'10. Simone Biles is a dwarf at her height if you go by the group's definition. As I said, not all dwarfs are like Peter Dinklage or Verne Troyer. As for Southeast Asian women, I do think that they should be categorized in a way that recognizes their environment/heredity (one of the problems I have with the group's one-size-fits-all definition).

In my experience it's actually the opposite, I tend to see way more above averagely tall women (5'6+), especially among younger girls, than tall guys. Then again, I feel as if I mostly pay attention to women taller than me (over 5'8), guys somewhat noticeably shorter than me (under 5'7), and guys massively taller than me (6'3+) in that exact order, so it could just be in my head

I know a lot of times the taller people here get upset when I bring it up but apparently another study shows another health risk of being too tall (link below):

There was a study with a large sampling size that proved that taller people are much more at risk for cancer. Also joint issues and back issues.

I always thought that heart issues were higher risk for those below average height (other than heart pumping harder if you're really tall or overweight).

It appears heart disease (Atherosclerosis) may be higher risk in shorter people than taller, but atrial fibrillation seems to be more prevalent in taller people.

The article states "very tall" which to me means 6'3-6'4 starting with those 6'5+ probably being at high risk (taller you are the more chance obviously)

Not sure if weak tall people like 5'11-6'1 area be at more risk than average 5'8-5'10.

I know the politician Fetterman from Pennsylvania had this issue and he had a stroke too he is listed as being 6'7-6'8 tall and overweight.

It does depend on how large the crowd is and how the dice rolls in terms of randomly having a bunch of tall guys being present in an area at any given time.

5'11-6'1 is a weird height range in the sense you can feel not so tall.

Supermarket is a wild card. At a decently crowded time you will get those 6'1-6'4 range guys.
A guy like me will feel a bit shorter.

Then there's always that one 6'5-6'6 guy who pops up but we tend to notice taller people more and can get a false sense of statistics.

I don't like feeling shorter but also would not like to be super tall because it is awkward and I'm a more reserved person.

6'2 would be my max height I think.

I'm almost 6'0 (5'11.5-5'11.8 normally by early evening)

My eye level clears 5'7 for sure.

I don't know how they calculate the average but going by what you said - that's called the 'mean' height which is interchangeable but probably how they calculated it.

Jackie Lee must live in Central America or Southeast Asia if he sees 4'8 women in the supermarket while he rarely sees women taller than 5'9! 4'10" is the official start of dwarfism. Even in the short section of our town, you rarely see women under 4'10. 4'11 is surprisingly somewhat common, though.

I have the opposite going on over here, I swear I live in shortsville (for guys at least) because the average guy seems to be maybe 5'7 and it's like 1 in 20 guys break 6 ft even though statistically it should be around 1 in 6. I see a lot more guys in the short-very short 5'4-5'6 range than guys tall/very tall 6'1-6'4.

Females seem to fare taller, above the US average of 5'3.75 for sure. I'm a almost 6'2 guy with a solid 5'9.25 eyeline and I see more girls at my eye level than I do guys my height....when statistically only 1 in 35 girls should be 5'9.25 and about 1 in 12-15 guys should be my height or more. And of course I check to make sure the girls are in regular shoes. Sometimes they'll have a 2 inch chunk sandal type but I have a 1.5 inch running shoe so it's not a huge difference. More often than not, the girls I see at 5'9 or better are wearing really flat low footwear. I wonder how many of them don't like such a height thus the footwear.

Honestly I rarely see men above 6’3 and 5’10 for women. I think the most common height range is 5’7-5’11 for men and 5’2-5’6 for women. I do sometimes see 6’0-6’2 men and 5’7-5’9 women but they’re more uncommon.
And a 4’11 girl is often average? Lol mate she would often be the shortest out of her friends and a 4’11 girl is equivalent to a 5’4 guy.

I'm 186.5-187 cm range out of bed, 185-185.5 cm range around midday/after going out, and 184-184.5 range as my lowest at night. I can hold up to 185.5 if its a lazy day at home.

I've found a lot of people still refer to me as "tall" recently, although to be fair I've simply never heard someone refer to me as otherwise so I'm basically collecting every tall reference I get (lol). Even had a 6'2 co-worker guess me at their height which was odd.

I usually feel average walking through a crowded shopping centre or when I go to the city. Also 5'8-5'10 girls from my perspective literally feel like the same height as me.

After looking at height percentile sources, and looking closely to men's heights in the UK (20-55), this is my height tier list:

5'9 - 50% exactly average and most common
5'8 and 5'10 37% and 63% low average and solid average
5'7 and 5'11 25% and 75% shortish and tallish
5'6 and 6'0 15% and 85% typical short and tall
5'5 and 6'1 9% and 91% solid short and solid tall
5'4 and 6'2 4% and 96% noticeably standout short and standout tall/ beginning of involving their height in a first interaction with people if they're tall.
5'3 and 6'3 2% and 98% very short and very tall. tall jokes common
5'2 and 6'4 99% common to be shortest and tallest in a supermarket.

Anything greater difference than average becomes less common but possibly becomes much rarer to find, could count with two hands to find these heights in a town -going shorter than 5'0 at

@Okidoki: It's somewhat rare to see VERY tall women. You see 5'9 and 5'10 women on a fairly routine basis in the "tall" part of town. That's not the case in the "short" part of town. It SEEMS like the average is 5'6" here while it could be 5'3" there.

I wouldn't even call 6'1 enormous for a woman in Stockholm either. I see probably 2 or 3 out of 30 women that height or taller.

I think 5’6.5 is a bit too short to be considered ‘tall for a woman’. it’s above average but i doubt it’s the start of tall.

5’7 is what i consider the start of tall/‘borderline tall’ since that height is a full 3 inches taller than the average female in the US while 5’6 range is only 2 inches taller which i don’t really think of as tall but instead above average.

In my experience, the trend is the exact opposite of what you’re stating. Tall and very tall people tend to have smaller heads relative to their height than short, average, and tallish people. I’ve noticed this among other guys around my height, and it applies to me as well.

I don’t have a small head by any means, but at 24.7cm length, it is certainly not big compared to my height of 199cm. I look very tall even when standing on my own with nobody nearby for reference.

Most people with heads that appear “substantially too large” for their bodies are short and average height. 185cm is definitely not special in that regard, as I’ve seen way, way more 6’1 guys with overly large looking heads than 6’2+ guys with the same proportions.

Im 199cm so quite a bit taller than you, but I remember a few years ago when I was a little shorter (around 196 or 197cm) sitting in a chair, waiting to get my student ID. I saw two tall looking guys walk in, and thought they were my height or a little shorter. Nope…the shorter one was around 6’7/201cm and the taller one was at least 205 or 206cm. It’s not like they towered over me, but seeing two guys taller than me is incredibly rare. Im surprised it doesn’t happen to you more often, because there are a lot of 190cm+ dudes out there.

Btw, i was also curious about an argument made on a site by a person, she found some stats claiming that from the country i am from, that 180-184 was more common for men than 175-179 interms of percentage, as the average is around 180. Is it an equal distribution or is there a bigger percentage of people in certain ranges? Like in Scotland, average is 5'9. Would you more commonly see men in 5'9-5'11 range than 5'7-5'9 for example or opposite? Or would it be equally as many by following a normal distribution, like you explained once?

@Michael 181 That's an exaggeration, i can tell you that now, from living here in these areas, going a couple of hours around the town. 182 is definitely not extremely tall at all, but should be very tall atleast statistically for young women, it's about 6 inches above average.

Anyways, it's not black and white like that, just looking at statistics. I can tell you now that every single day, walking atleast an hour or more everyday, i see atleast a couple of 5'9-5'10 women, if not 5'9-5'11 women every day, or every other day. 6'0 could possibly be every other day to every couple of days, 6'1, every couple of days to 1-2 weeks. I pay ofcourse attention to footwear, posture etc.

Even 6'1, although close, is not extremely tall in my opinion, i think if you asked inhabitants here, you would get mixed opinions on that. I think most people here would agree that 6'1.5-6'3 range is when it starts and looks very noticeably really tall here for a woman.

In my opinion, about 187 cm is when you could call a woman extremely tall here, 190 definitely. For sure, nothing less than 185-186.

Many people don't even consider 180-182 very tall here, it's mixed opinions on that speaking from experience, but statistically, it is though. I would say 5'11 is about the start of very tall here for a woman, 179 cm maybe.

Height inflation in Sweden? There is none. If anything, I would say downplaying and claiming you are a bit shorter than you really are is more common.

I have been measured at 6'1 by doctors and I see women taller than me almost every time I go out. I was at at a small cafe earlier this week and saw two women taller than me.

I think it’s a decent chart but you have to remember that men have a much larger standard deviation for height than women. In most studies for men it ranges 2.5-2.75 inches for almost populations and only 2-2.3 inches for women. So if the average for women is 5’4 and for men 5’9, a woman that is 6’ who is 8 inches above average is MUCH taller for her gender than a man who is 6’5 and 8 inches over average! In fact looking at that ANSUR 2 data I mentioned earlier, there were about 2000 women, maybe it was 1990 women total for the count. There were only 6 women at or above a solid 5’11 and only one woman measure 6’ flat and she was the tallest of almost two thousand US women. In the men’s data the tallest individual iirc was 6’8.

Just using the difference in standard deviations, a 6’0 woman is about equal to a 6’7 man in rarity. I’m over 181cm and I have met one woman in the past year who was about my height in public, and maybe 2 others who were within an inch of me. Women over 5’10 are fairly rare in public and the rarity goes up significantly every half inch. Then again I’ve only seen one man I’m confident was at least 6’7 in public in the last 2 years. He had Conan’s leggy build and looked very uncomfortable in public. I realized I was staring and then stopped but my bud and I both had to guess his height after. For reference my buddy is also about 182ish and we were fairly tall in most situations all day until we saw that guy. I notice women over 5’10 act the same way here, lots of men stare and not for nice reasons.

Anyways the point is that women are much more grouped around the average height than men are. There are a lot of short and tall men. There are not very many short or tall women by comparison.

I haven’t studied that population but it’s possible. Russians are fairly short for that part of Europe at about 176 average but the baltics nearby are also very tall and over 179 across the board. Estonia in particular is close to Dutch height. The region from west germany all the way to Russia is a genetic cline with a mix of Slavic/Germanic/Baltic/Uralic/Turkic populations mixing for the past two thousand years. Ukraine in particular is the likely Urheimat of the Indo European expansion and the IE populations were tall compared to the Anatolian farmers (but shorter than the hunter gatherers). So it’s an area that has historically had tallish people, compared to Russia which only got a comparatively stable population about 1200 years ago.

So a bit off-topic, but is it possible to have temporary height loss occur for multiple days? I'm around 171 cm, and in August I remember measuring consistently a strong 171 cm, usually a bit over it as well. In the morning, I could reach as high as 173 cm. Once, I measured 172.2 cm in the afternoon. I know those marks were accurate as I have previous height marks on that same wall. Recently, I'm not really reaching those marks as easily as I did back then though. Sometimes I measure as low as 170 cm flat and in public, I've been feeling as if I'm a lot shorter than that

For example, I have a friend who is around 5'6, who I felt a lot taller than back in August. This last week, I've felt as if we're almost the same height. I've been pretty sick for around two weeks, still am, and I often feel muscle tension because of that. I also haven't slept that well. Could this cause temporary height loss, and how could I regain my height if that's the case?

I am 178 cm (typically), and I felt the average height in downtown Athens was possibly a solid 5'9 (176 cm) compared to my own. A lot of the Greek guys in my age range were shorter than me barring some that edged me out or were my height within a half inch or so. From one Greek to another, I would say that 178 cm is above average in Greece. I hit 180 cm in shoes (I know that doesn't count) so my height definitely feels above average there.

Maybe for young Greek guys like us, the average is around 177 cm, but I would say the overall average is 175-176 cm. I am also the tallest member of my family whenever I visit, so I guess I lucked out on the gene pool.

@Rockaway. I agree a 193 cm guy is tall and most people will notice this person because of his height. But here is the point: at 193 cm you are still in a certain height frame where people do not turn around in the streets because of your height. To be considered very tall or unusually tall you need to be 200 cm or above. A Giant would need to be at least 210 cm tall, thats 35 cm standard deviation from the average, in the opposite direction it would be a height of 140 cm to be considered a dwarf for males. A guy like Dany de Vito is very short but not a dwarf for me.

I would tweak that to 6'3-6'6 as very tall range, 6'6-6'10 extremely tall range and 6 ft 10 as a true giant, though I can see an argument for 6 ft 8 and over as giant. I don't think guys start to look extremely tall until they hit a strong 6'5 range like Howard Stern or Klitschko etc, around the 197 mark. Short range I typically think of as 5 ft 5 - 5 ft 8, "very" short would be more like a Prince or Michael J Fox sort of height. Extremely short like a Kevin Hart sort of height.

Yes I live in the UK and I think it depends on the age group of people. Around elderly guys, I do feel quite tall. I think the average is probably around the 5’7 range for elderly men. But around younger guys I can feel closer to average. I think the average is 5’9.5 for young guys. But I think the overall average in the UK could possibly be around 5’8.5-5’8.75 range, if you include all the ethnic minorities and the age groups.
I think for women, it can be slightly under 5’4.

In terms of average height. I'm from Greece and i'd say average in Italy is probably similar,atleast in the southern parts. 175-177cm for young men is solid average and a little less like 174-175 for general population. I also believe most reported avegages are abit stretched as they are generally self-reported and most people claim their height in-shoes or just give a random number(thus probably exaggerating). I always feel above average and sometimes tallish at my height,no matter the situation and the people surrounding me.

5'9 - 5'10 is certainly a decent range, there is something good to be said about average range heights just as there are positive things to say about tall heights.
I think legit 5'10 is quite underrated - sure, it's fairly average in relation to other men in western countries, but in real life it has very balanced proportions whilst simultaneously looking compact. (Not a bad thing especially if joining the military.)
Daniel Craig is a good example of how good 5'10 can potentially look in films.
I also think that with respect to the worldwide average being something around 171cm or 5'8 at most for young men, people who are 5'9 - 5'10 should spend some time in southern and eastern Asia to gain perspective on their height.
5'9/5'10 in Thailand for example is the equivalent of 6'0/6'1 in Europe.

The interesting thing about head size is that there isn't much difference in head size between someone that is 183cm/184cm vs 185cm/186cm. The 1cm to 2cm difference is spread out over leg and torso length as well as head length, but the difference in head size is actually surprisingly noticeable in real life from my observations.
It seems that this range is markedly transitional between balanced tall and lanky overall.

@Rockaway. I agree a 193 cm guy is tall and most people will notice this person because of his height. But here is the point: at 193 cm you are still in a certain height frame where people do not turn around in the streets because of your height. To be considered very tall or unusually tall you need to be 200 cm or above. A Giant would need to be at least 210 cm tall, thats 35 cm standard deviation from the average, in the opposite direction it would be a height of 140 cm to be considered a dwarf for males. A guy like Dany de Vito is very short but not a dwarf for me.

I’m surprised you feel noticeably above average or tallish at 5 ft 10, normally those who are 5 ft 11 feel that way.

I assume you live in the U.K.? In this case, is the average really 5 ft 9? More like 5 ft 8.5? I feel 5 ft 10 guys will only feel above average if the average is 5 ft 8.5. 1.5 inches above average is the beginning of “feeling noticeably” above average.

Seems as though the prospect of U.K. average of 5 ft 9 is unlikely, maybe late morning.

@bgguy2 yeah your chart is good, 6'0 is one of the tallest around like in a small room, but in a crowd it can be more tallish at times. I think because of young guys 6'1+ is tall in more settings. 6'3+ is usually one of the few tallest around. I would say its borderline very tall and standout as its about 5 inches above the young average, at least in Canada and U.S. 6'3.5 maybe is start of very tall. For example I just remember in some of my big classes in university usually there was just like 1 or two 6'3-6'4 guys, a rare 6'6-6'7 guy, and the rest shorter. There were a good amount 6'0-6'2 where it feels decently tall but not really standout

From late morning to evening on average we shrink another fraction 1cm, so young white guys are 5 ft 9.5 range 176.5-177 cm. I go by evening/low height as I feel that’s our real height at the end of the day.

I have no problems with your opinions or others, if you go by the cdc morning height statistics where young non Hispanic white guys are 5 ft 10 then that’s fine.

I wouldn't call 177 cm a low average, I'd say that's a solid average height for men. The difference between 174 cm and 177 cm is 3 cm, and while it may not sound like a lot, it is. I am 178 cm (overall) and if I were 3 cm taller, I would be 181 cm or 5'11.25. If I were 5'11.25, I'd feel the difference. So, likewise, if you went from 174 cm (5'8.5) to 177 cm (5'9.7 - slight round-up from 5'9.68), you would feel taller than you were before.

In conclusion, I disagree with your chart. Your ranges for categories are too broad. I know this is based in Sweden, but here in Canada, you would be the average height at 177 cm.

5’9” - IMO still shorter than just “average” but not noticeably so

5’11” - slightly above average
6’0” - weak tall / solid above average
6’1” - start of solid tall
6’2” - tall
6’3” - very tall
6’4” - 6’6” - extremely tall
6’7” and above - giant

I think people underestimate how tall a true 6’4” afternoon height is.

IMO ideal height range is 5’11.5” - 6’2.5”

I suspect it's higher than average because Rob has cherry picked a few individuals over 6 ft 6 who are really notable for their heights. People like Mark Eaton, Shawn Bradley, Yao Ming, Dutch Giant, Khali and Ian Whyte etc are going to help bump up the average. Also there's a lot of male actors over 6 ft which people might want to know their height so they get listed, bumping up the average. Though there's also a few very short individuals on here too.

In fairness, a 5'8 woman is the equivalent of a 6'1 guy, so that's tall. This means that 5'4 should be the average height of a woman. It also means that 5'9 should be the average height of a man. I suppose if we subtract four inches below those heights, then it would mean we're getting into pretty short territory for either sex.

I guess from your perspective, being 6'6-range, 6'1 doesn't look that tall to you since you're five inches taller. It's like me standing next to a 5'5 guy who would look pretty short from my perspective.

When the CDC says measurements are done in the morning, they mean in the AM, not straight out of bed. By the time the volunteers get measured anywhere except their own home, are bound to have already lost half or very close to half an inch.

As a general rule, about half the height you lose in the entire day happens in your first 45–60 minutes of being out and about. So if average height is 5ft 10, that means out-of-bed height was close to 5ft10.5.

My height chart in Sweden would be:

164 cm and under: Really short

165-168: Short

169-173: Shortish, "below average"

174-177: Low average

178-181: Solid average

182-184: Kinda tall, Definitely above average

185-187: Tall

188-191: The tall guy

192-195: Unusually tall

196 and over: Gigantic or Massive

With that said, this can vary a lot depending on social groups and whatnot. The other day in my school I witnessed a friend group where the shortest guy was like 185 cm and the tallest guy looked 195 cm and seemed to blend in really well as slightly above average. But generally, walking around the street or taking public transport, I feel this is pretty accurate

Definitely agreed, anything in the 5'11-6'1 range is pretty much optimal if you want to sometimes "feel tall" but not stand out in crowds. Being 6'2 or over really is a hit or miss and it really varies how well people pull it off

Also, speaking of arms, my dad has a really impressive wingspan at 182-183 cm for his either 171 or 173 cm peak height. He also has a 32" inseam. He started drinking and smoking excessively at around 13 years old, so in his case I genuinely think he could've stunted his growth. Last time I measured I wasn't even close to my dad's wingspan, but I do have a 32-33" inseam

I am 184 range evening and most of the time feel start of tall around them, sometimes tallish of course as its not that far from average. You have to be around 10 cm taller than average to feel more solidly tall.

Average for the Netherlands is about 5’11.5 but it is closer to 5’11 in the cities and the south and closer to 6’ in the north. The north have Frisian genetics which are much taller than standard Dutch/German/danish height genes, and Frisians were known to be very tall people even 1000 years ago. Non-Frisian Dutch are NOT especially tall.

Ideal height doesn't simply encompass the 70th/80th/90th percentiles. It's also about body proportions.

Onscreen 187cm - 189cm looks excellent.
Even 190cm - 193cm/194cm can look great in pictures and movies which certainly counts for something, but this is importantly, not the same as real life.

The body length of 187cm - 189cm in real life can look quite good, but ideal head size vs body length is at roughly 182cm/183cm - 185cm. (Maybe 180cm at a minimum and 186cm at a maximum.)
To narrow things down further the ideal range for optimum head size in relation to body length could reasonably be 183.5cm/184cm - 184.5cm/185cm assuming good proportions.
When a person gets above 185cm their head looks too big in real life.
Overall head size in general I see as being important - not merely in relation to body length.

5'11½ - 6'1 is truly a great range. I don't think an individual needs to be taller than the vast majority, 6'2/6'3 for example, to be considered an ideal height. It's nice to be taller than most people and I certainly get that, but 6'0/6'1 is tall enough and very convenient.

I'm not trying to criticise other heights, as most have a certain appeal for one reason or another, but this is the conclusion I have come to based upon experience as well as numerous observations in real life over many years.

I take in to consideration what you have said, but that is honestly not what I observed.
The average for young French men was at most 5'9, and that's being generous. 5'8 range is more accurate. Overall the French average is 5'8 (5'8½ - 5'9 at most for those under 40).

In the UK the overall average is 5'9, but 5'9½ - 5'10 for young men depending on social demographic.
Some working class areas are 5'9 for young guys and middle-class areas 5'10.
The collective average is something in the 5'9½ - 5'9¾ range for under 40's.

5’7-5’11 is pretty much plain old average territory. I’m guessing this is a range over 50% of men fall in…the bulk of the population. You don’t really stick out as far as height being something people really notice unless you just happen to be around a group of people that are very tall like maybe a basketball team.

You might could even broaden that common range to 5’6.5-5’11.5 and maybe it would represent 60-70% of men. When I put in 5.6.5” on the tall life calculator it’s 17th percentile so still really common….sorta picture how Ricky Hatton (5’6 flat) looks beside Rob.

@Meltdown: Your height chart is almost identical to my guesses for black and white younger American women. I wonder about younger Asian American women. My guess is that their average is similar to Latinas. I also think that there are pockets of shorter younger white American women (based on my experience).

yeah even if your mom is pretty short you ended up a little taller than your dad, kinda like myself. Mom's 5'3, dad was a 5'10 peak, i topped out at 5'10.75.

Maybe i can still get a fraction but i don't know.

It’s a misconception that someone “could have grown taller” simply because they have a very high ape index. Arms and legs basically grow the exact same and fuse around the same time so you were genetically supposed to have long arms and decent height combination. I assume there’s a decent chance you also have long legs for your height. I have seen a bunch of short guys claim they had stunted growth because they were 5’5 with a 5’11 wingspan or something. It’s highly unlikely that someone had stunted growth if they just have long arms, it’s definitely more of a genetic chance thing than a stunted growth indicator. The only time it really could indicate stunted growth is if you also have scoliosis, since people with scoliosis have longer wingspan vs height almost always, because they are missing height in their torso. See Arnold Schwarzenegger, he is only a weak 5’11 now due to spinal collapse but still has (my estimate) 6’5 wingspan. His arms almost touch the ground if he’s barefoot at the beach now. Arnold definitely wasn’t stunted, in fact he clearly had genetics that fused his spinal cord growth plates before his arm and leg plates. Usually arms and leg long bones fuse separately from the torso and depending on which plates fuse first will determine your proportions. Hence long torso going with short arms and short torso often going with long arms. Torso tends to fuse last on average but for tall men 190+cm they are almost always long in torso or long in legs, very rare to be normal proportions. Again always exceptions

But yeah long arms are very good looking and I wish mine were about an inch longer on each arm overall. I think being 180 with 195 wingspan is better looking than me being 181 with 183 wingspan. I think you’d get guessed at 6’1 pretty often just based on arm length whereas people think I’m 6’ flat. Even though I’m a smidge taller than you I think I’d rather have your height and proportions.

Since we're talking about armspans as well. Mine is 195cm at almost 180cm. Could have grown taller, it's definitely an advantage in everyday life i can tell you. Probably the reason why people guess me taller than 180 and why i look 181 next to objects of known height (compared myself in front of the mirror next to a 6ft wallframe and my hair was slightly under.

For the record I am 181cm with 93cm sitting height (51.4%, slightly long legs) and 183cm ape index (slight short arms). Not the best looking combination but nobody can really tell. Just means it’s harder to find suits that work off the rack since long sleeves usually come with long pants and vice versa. Average wingspan for my proportions and height would be 186cm, so my arms are about half an inch short.

I actually have data for armspan too. For a white American man the average is about 1.025x longer than your height, with a standard deviation of .025x. So if your armspan and height are equal then you have a lower ape index than 85% of men your height. However it is closely related to leg length too. Average white sitting height is a bit over 52%, normal range is 51% to 53.5%. Those with around 51% usually have an ape index of 1.05x height and those with 53.5% average closer to 1.01x

For white women, 1.01x is average, for black men it is closer to 1.06x, for east Asian men it is 1.0x, Asian women are .99x, south and south East Asians for both sexes are similar to the black ratio. Hispanics are very similar to white average for their given sitting height.

So for a typical 5’10 white man with 52.2% sitting height ratio, the average is actually just under 6’ wingspan. Again, if they are leggy like Arnold (who probably had a 50-51% sitting height ratio at peak, lower now) they will probably be closer to 6’1 to 6’2 wingspan. Arnold’s wingspan is probably 6’5+. If they have long torso like Ryan Reynolds it might be 70-71 inches. Of course there are exceptions like Michael Phelps.

I do remember one time though at my former job that there was a guy who had very long-ish proportions, with a long neck, lanky body build, and a small head, who I estimated to be around 6'2 territory, 6'3 at absolute most, could look below 6'2. The boss, a guy who I estimated at around 5'4, once described him as "6'5". I just started laughing. I didn't argue against it because that would be annoying, but "6'5"? How the hell? I thought about it for a while until my only conclusion was that he exaggerated his own height by 3 inches and had convinced himself that he was 5'7 lol

Admittedly, sometimes I forget just how tall 6'2 is irl, at least for a guy like me. Most of the celebs listed on here are well-proportioned and have conventionally handsome body types and usually not a typical "tall person-face" so when I see a lanky guy with long legs and a long neck irl that looks 6'2 next to other people, I could still be biased and estimate that person as high as 6'4

I respect your opinion, many people will identify their height as the morning height, others in the evening like me. In my opinion our low height is our REAL height because we don’t shrink further anymore.

@ZDA. I would agree with Bobby. Most measurements are taken in the morning, not directly out of bed but 1 to 4 hours out of bed so I feel it is good time to get your height measured. The argument you make that you do not shrink further and therefore your evening height is your real height does not make much sense to me. You certainly do not shrink further but you grow again at night and as we all know you need to sleep and lay at a certain point:) Some people state the maximum height that they can reach which is their out of bed height. For argument sake,It could also be considered your real height, same as your low evening height.

Could be an indication he's somewhere in between or...maybe 6ft 6 barefoot and 6ft 7 early in day (or shoes).

That’s not necessarily true. He could be 6’4 or 6’5 barefoot and claim that. I’ve seen a guy who was 6’6ish claim 6’9 once and a buddy of mine who is 6’5 1/4” stood next to him and the guy was max 1” taller than him. While that could be the reason, that’s not the only one

@Michael 181 Yup, people were undoubtedly shorter in Copenhagen in my experience. As soon I saw massive guys or women near my height in Copenhagen, they were very often talking swedish as well. I felt about the same in Copenhagen as people describing it here, but Stockholm is way off from what other people claim here.

If you go to page 22, white young guys at 20-29 average at 178 cm a flat 5 ft 10 (this was conducted during the morning, so 176.5-177cm by evening 5 ft 9.5).

The average overall height of the general population 20+ is a flat 5 ft 9 or 175.3 (again done in the morning so, 5 ft 8.5 is the real average by evening)

Interestingly if you look at 20-29 age group that involves all races, this age group actually shrank to 175.8 cm compared to age group of 30-39 who measured 176.3. So Adrian the claim you made about “height is going up” or it’s increasing, are they?

A 9th percentile height isn't very short, just like a 91st percentile height isn't very tall. Very means at least 2 SD away from average, so for younger white women (assuming 5'5 average) very short would be more like 4'11 and down. 5'8.5 is on the other end of the spectrum at the 91st percentile, and that's definitely not very tall for young white women.

Hi Rob, I know you’ve probably gotten this question a lot, but how much does running speed up height loss during the day? I checked my height today and I seemed abnormally close to my low for a height measurement before noon (i.e., within a few millimeters) after running for an hour. I did run pretty hard, though. I was also up for about a couple hours before running.

I think I'm also a bit of a late bloomer in terms of height. I was 157-158 cm in seventh grade, 162-163 cm in eighth grade, 164-165 cm in ninth grade, 165-166 cm first year of high school, 167-168 cm second year, and now I measure 171 cm third year. Pretty much everyone in my family put on a bit after 18 (I'm 17 rn) so it really does depend on genetics

In the UK and US, 5’9 is the average. For younger guys (millenials and gen z) it’s 5’9.5-5’9.75. In some european countries like germany, poland, czech republic etc. 5’10 is probably the average.

Most guys still don't grow after turning maybe 19 or near 20, and generally most guys slow down around age 16. But since you mention you have the genes for late growth, I actually think you could reach as high as 185.5 cm at maybe age 22. I wouldn't expect more than that though

@James B 172 cm Whaaat? There's no way you're the same height as me and knew a 6'6.5 guy who you consider "not that gigantic". The few people I have met around that range I perceived as absolutely massive, and it was pretty clear that even their proportions made them look gigantic. I'd say pretty much everything over 190 cm, at least for me, maybe isn't "gigantic", but still very obviously big, towering people

I read an article about some states in the USA having high averages like 5'10-5'10.5, and maybe the average for young whites could be 179.5-180cm (just guessing), but other states with mostly white population were in the range 5'9-5'10.
But overall I agree with you, the average tends to fall in more populated and ethnically diverse places (even if the average age is not that high), if we consider the state of NY the average is 36.9 years old which is relatively young compared to average for the USA and Europe in general.
