One of my old mates used to claim he was about 6'4. This was before I "got into" heights and I always thought he was about 6'2. He had a boots laser measurement at 4pm and it said he was 6'1.6. he was quite suprised but I wasn't lol, he claims 6'1 and a half now when asked.

@kevin 6’0.25 I knew this guy who was on my wrestling team in high school who claimed to be 6’2.5/189cm…. He was shorter than me I think he was 6’0 flat so that day even tho I’ll usually claim 6’1 I told him I was 6’0 and the look on his face was hilarious but it’s so weird how similar our stories are the way they added the half an inch 😂

Inflation is not a thing where I live, it's the other way around. I remember recently a man declaring himself "188cm" while being clearly way above 190cm, probably 193 or thereabouts. Also a younger guy calling himself "1.80" when he was probably somewhere in the 187-189cm range. I only remember one instance of a person actually inflating their height in this country. A guy calling himself 182cm while reaching with the the top of his head to my eyes. That is a rarity though, most guys seem to think it's a flex to shave of 3-5cm of their actual height and claim to be shorter.

Do you read comments at 5:30-6am? I think you told me the exact time before, I must have forgotten. It’d be cool if there was a dark mode filter option that automatically dimmed the page for more comfortable night time screen reading.
Editor Rob
Not so much recently. It varies what time I go on the computer as there's lots of other tasks, plus we are now looking after an 11 month old baby for the next couple of years, that will be 4 days a week!

Hey Rob, hope everything is well! Do you think Khamzat Chimaev will get a page? He's listed 6'2 and looks close to it, I have him at around 6'1 1/2 at least probably 187 cm flat. Do you think that's a reasonable range?
Editor Rob
It might be worth considering.
Kevin 6'0.25 said on 13/Aug/25
What's the most inflated height claim you guys have seen IRL? Today a guy at work claimed to be 6'5 and a half. He looks 6'2.5"/189cm range to me. Why inflate when you're already tall. I mean, as if inflating to 6'5 wasn't enough he had to add the half lol. I didn't feel like calling him out on it.

Hey Rob - based on my previous comment. What height would you list me as? And what height do you think I am out of bed? How do I compare to guys like alanine Yamal and Andrew Garfield?

Hope all is well with you. Must’ve been years since I’ve last commented. Like a ninja I’ve been following Celebheights from the shadows keeping myself up to date!
Editor Rob
Your stats are enough to go with an honest 5ft 10.5 listing. You might find today if you stood beside somebody like Brad Pitt, folk would probably guess you the same height!
Leonard Milano said on 13/Aug/25
Hi Rob! If I’m 5’7 1/4” out of bed, what height would you list me as on your site?
Editor Rob
Would depend on how tall you looked with others or in person. I think you might seem weak 5ft 7 in person, but some people can only shrink half inch, whilst others nearer an inch!
ithadtobeyou1924 said on 13/Aug/25
@vetter
It's not honest to claim to be shorter than you are. Neither are you a nerd because you claim an exact number instead of "rounding" it to something that ends with 0.
6'0.5king said on 12/Aug/25
Hey rob if you were a 1/2 height what would you claim like being a 1/4 and 3/4 heights are way simpler in my opinion since it’s easier to just round up or round down but in my case when I was 16 I was almost my height now only 1/2 cm shorter (183.8-9) and for a while I would claim 6’0 but almost all the time there would be a 5’10 guy in there saying “your not 6’0 I’m 6’0” so at some point and especially after I grew a little bit more to (184.3-4) range I started rounding up to 6’1 and I’ll still get someone here and there saying “no your 6’3” but it’s not as common as before but most of the time if I’m being honest I mostly just say “almost 6’1”
Editor Rob
The 'Almost' covers your range. If you were more a 6ft 1/4 guy at lunch, I wouldn't go with 'almost 6ft 1'.
I don't think there's anything wrong with claiming half an inch. When you consider how infrequent we give our heights to others, adding 'and a half' is nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Got my height measured today at the physiotherapist. Just under 5’10.5” 7.5 hours out of bed. I had been working in the morning and did some heavy lifting at work but when I came home I laid on the couch for a bit. Then I walked 10-15 minutes to my physiotherapist who had me do hamstring curls with weights and some other movements for my injured hamstrings. Then I saw the studio meter attached to the wall and asked to be measured. 178.5-179 was my height. I’m 25 now, so guess I gained a few mm since 19.

New CDC anthropometric reference data for 2021-2023 came out in June. Not sure if it was posted here before. Click Here

Note that the sample size is significantly smaller this time around. The previous 2015-2018 data measured the height of 5092 men and 5510 women compared to only 2690 men and 3307 women for the 2021-2023 data. Also, they no longer distinguish race.

Overall, it seems like the average height of Americans is still holding steady in the 5'9-5'9.5 range for men and 5'3.5-5'4 range for women.

Hey Rob, any estimate on Arsenal's new signing Viktor Gyokeres? He is listed 189 and 187 cm on different sites, the latter most likely being closer to the truth. Is that range likely? Looks no less than 186 cm based on what I have seen

Did you stop using the bar, or were you just trying to clear some space at home?
Editor Rob
Just clearing space. I had to move 90% of stuff to storage last year for months and the house had become packed with too much stuff.
MatPit said on 9/Aug/25
@vetter
Yeah I think 90% of the time you're a later bloomer if you grow over a foot after 13. Maybe the ones ending up 6'5+ are exceptions, though the tall ones are often late bloomers too. I did gymnastics as a kid and many of us quit it around early teenage years. There it was not uncommon to grow a foot after 13. But yeah otherwise pretty rare.
ithadtobeyou1924 said on 9/Aug/25
@vetter
If you are Swedish, which I'm 99% sure you are, can you explain why you swedes "downgrade" yourselves and claim to be 180cm when you're taller than that? Like, what is the point? You do it all the time.
Siner750 said on 8/Aug/25
Rob, what height or height range do you think most men would pick to be if they could choose?
Editor Rob
I believe a lot would choose within 6ft to 6ft 2 range.
vetter said on 8/Aug/25
@MatPit Yeah, it's not or abnormal or a anything to grow a full foot or a bit more after 13 but it's still way above though and thus a bit more rare. But fairly common for late bloomers tho. I also know someone who used to be just like you, 5ft at 13 or around 152cm and now he is 190 or 189cm tall. His dad and grandfather were 197cm and 196cm respectively, so he had to catch up some of that. That's about 15 inches after 13

what do you guys think is actually our low height ? i measured myself yesterday after being awake for 8 or 8.5 hours . i was sitting most of the day and then later i was in the supermarket with my brother . we went there with the car so sitting comfortably in the car might have relaxed my spine a little however we were 10-20 minutes in the car max and after we arrived back i was carrying bags home for 10 minutes which stressed my spine so it probably outbalanced the car driving . and i measured myself without sitting around again when i arrived home and i was 175.9cm with the aerosol can method and without busting a gut . but i can fall to 175.7cm after being awake for 15+ hours . i have the feeling that the 175.7 is between my actual low and my extreme low measurement . i dont know if the 175.7 actually qualifies as my low since i only reach it after very hard days and 14-15+ hours being awake
George89 said on 8/Aug/25
@Rob That makes sense. I did think the height statistics was a load of twoddle. My brother goes between 181-179cm and he's 34 years old. There's no way the average man in the UK is that range. We walk around together and he's noticeably above average. I think between 176 and 174cm is closer and the encompasses the range of heights close to it.

Im between 174 and 172.2cm and I feel taller than a good third of men of all age groups. Thats a conservative estimate as some days it feels a little more than that.
Editor Rob
For me, 175-6 seems the average here in Scotland.

If you can get 6ft as a morning height, then 5ft 11.5 would be a fair shout as a listing.

You've got a wider range of shrinkage. You could be a 6ft 3/4 guy.

Hey Rob, what are some good stretch excercises to prevent height loss as we age and how often should I do them ?
Editor Rob
Personally I just do some 10-15 minute exercise regime at least 5 times a week and that includes basic stretching to limber up, like toe touching, raising arms up above head. Nothing extravagant really.
I believe it has been helping Jenny stabilize her height and not lose any over the last couple of years..

Hopefully I'll grow a bit i've grown atleast a couple cm since 18 and 1/8 inch since turning 20, I'm turning 21 in a couple months. I claim 180cm tall though mostly

George89 said on 2/Aug/25
Hey Rob, ive had thoughts about height statistics. I asked chatgpt a question regarding the validity of say a 5ft9 average for men in the UK and US. It said the majority of actual measured people will be closer to morning height and that taking a cm off for night heights would be realistic.

So let's say 175.5cm is the measured average for a nation. 174cmish is closer to the UK average night time height. What do you think about that?
Editor Rob
A few months ago one user posted a link to a height study in which they recorded actual height and what the claimed height was. Men tended to overinflate a bit, I believe near 2cm, women a bit less than that. So yeah, on average the claimed height would be morning.
Gianni 5' 7 said on 2/Aug/25
Hi Rob,

On average, how long does it take to shrunk a full cm from "Just out of bed" height? And then: is it fair to say that at lunch time you've already experienced about 2/3 of your daily loss (on average, as always)?
Editor Rob
It can take 2-3 hours. Assuming up at 7am, then by lunch I would expect over half to be lost, maybe approaching 2/3rds.

You might have a chance of nearing 184cm very first thing...but I would check it yourself, literally within 30 seconds of wakening.

Editor Rob
I think you have to be careful overthinking height. Remember most people are never going to raise an eyebrow if you go with 184cm - when somebody adds an inch or 2, then far more people will notice (assuming they are honest about their height to begin with).
Emil said on 2/Aug/25

It really depends on where in the US, since it's a very diverse country. In California, which is heavily influenced by people of Latin American origin, then 6'2 would be enough to stand out, even in bigger crowds.

In Montana, you'd likely have to be 6'4 or so

I use a Rolson 5m tape, those should follow EU standards for tape measures so the error can’t be huge. Even the least accurate class (Class 3) is off by around 4.6mm over a full length. My one doesn’t say what class it is, so I’m not sure if it’s a class 2 or 3.

Strange to have them off, but maybe there are cases of printing errors out there, a bit like the stadiometer with small errors (2mm or so).

Can you have a look at Tim Robinson Rob? I was thinking 5'9.5 but in friendship movie sometimes he looks taller than rudd but barely. He could be 5'9.25 but no lower than that. I can't make my mind up between 5'9.25 and 5'9.5 for him.

If you went by eyelevels for him and Rudd, you'd think 1/2 inch for Tim easily, but I think Rudd has a lower eyelevel, so the difference might not be much at all.

Hi Rob,
Thanks again for your previous reply. I wanted to give you a quick update and ask for your opinion once more.
This time I had an absolutely amazing sleep. I went to bed at 00:37 and woke up at 12:08. I measured myself two hours after waking, at 14:08, and I was just under 6ft 1, around 185.2 cm.
Do you think this kind of measurement is still valid for a height claim, or does the long sleep make it slightly “inflated” compared to a more typical day?
If you were consistently around 185.2 cm two hours after waking, would you personally go with 185 cm or still prefer to round down to 184?
I’m just trying to be as honest as possible. Really appreciate your thoughts.
Editor Rob
I might personally end up claiming 184cm with your stats, but many would choose to go with the 185cm claim, especially if they don't care that much about height and ended up measuring between 184 and 185 at a Doctor's 10-11am appointment.
Siner750 said on 27/Jul/25
Rob, for people who are half heights as their midday height like 5’10.5 or 6’1.5 do you think it’s honest for them to just round up, as most people just say their foot and inches without fractions. would u say someone who’s 6’2.5 is closer to fitting in with 6’3ers or 6’2ers?
Editor Rob
I can see why may will round up, because they are pretty much going to be the 6ft 3 out of bed. However, there's nothing wrong with claiming a half inch.
Pretzelss said on 27/Jul/25
Rob i got measured as 189cm in medical appointment after being awake for about 6.5 hours. Can i claim 190cm?
Editor Rob
I would check your own height around lunch and if it was something like 189.5 or thereabouts, then 190 is fine. If you went with the 189cm figure, nearly everyone will think you are very honest with your claim. You will likely find you are taller than half the guys who claim 190cm.

Rob, how long does a male have to be awake to reach his lowest height or at least near it?
Editor Rob
It varies, but if you have an active day and on feet a lot, you could be reaching a typical low by 5-6pm range after you come home....then as you rehydrate and relax a bit, you might find you regain a couple of mm.

again regarding ideal height :

in my experience 180cm looks best and most harmonic . and it is a solid height and high end of average to a little above average and can not rarely look and feel tallish . "even me" at 176cm i feel a solid height and not short even here in germany . but the problem with 180cm is when you are next to men who are 193+ (and already a little bit next to 188+) you will look and feel a little short so the best would be that you have a little more vertical length / height to hold your own a little better while at the same time not have any negative sides that come with more height yet ...i have noticed that above 185cm evening height is starting to look a little too elongated vertically and many men that height already have less ideal body + face + head proportions and it is also harder to build muscle mass . above 185cm is still good dont get me wrong but imo it is just not perfect anymore ...but it also depens on the man...above 185cm CAN still look perfect when everything is harmonic. i do think though that 180 - 185 is always better than anything above 185

183cm at night , 184cm at night, and maybe at a stretch 185cm at night with good proportions and broad shoulders and good facial features and good head proportions is the sweet spot . if i could choose any height to be but keep my current facial look and body proportions and body frame i would take 184cm evening height. like basically take me as i am now but just make me vertically 184 instead of 176

at this height (183-185) the only people who will make you look and feel a little short are those who are 197-199cm and taller and such people are not common even nowdays even in the west . and who cares if you look a bit shortish next to semi giants ? it is not about being the tallest person in the room you know .... if we go by that then 188cm is not tall enough when you are next to 205cm+ NBA players or something lol

so again 183-185cm range in the evening is the sweet spot . with good body proportions and good facial features and broad shoulders

Rob, an hour and a half after waking up this morning, I'm exactly 185 cm tall.
What I wanted to ask you is your personal opinion. If you were exactly like that after this period of time, you would say 184 or 185 cm. Thank you very much.
Editor Rob
So about 2 hours from waking you could be 184.5-184.7 range. Say you have little care about height and then went to a Doctor appointment at 10am. He might measure you 184.6cm and round you to 185 on his notes. There's no issue claiming 185, but I suppose you are very aware of your height range and realise that by afternoon you are likely closer to 184...if you like being more modest, go with 184cm.
glouglou237 said on 25/Jul/25
For me an ideal is an height that makes you vibrate , that you feel like is an asset to you and makes you enjoy life . i think 5"11 to 6"2.5 , 180 to 189 might be the most desirable height range and many seems to agree . And I feel like the 184 to 187.5 zone ( strong 6 foot to very strong 6"1) are the height that would never go wrong espicially if paired with a solid physic . When you see guys that are 100 percents stasfied with their height they're always in the 6 feet to 6"2 range . Even 6"2 can feel too tall at times whereas 6"0 to 6"1 would never feel too much. That why a think the absolut ideal is more 6 feet to 6"1.5 / 6"1 3/4 . When you look at Cavill 6"0 1/2 , Ronaldo 6"1 , Pierce Brosnan 6"1 1/4 and Eric Cantona 6"2 , those are people that stand at they're fullest height 24hours/24hours, because those guys like their height and are 100% content with their statures .For a man one of the most beautiful gift that you can have is having a height in the 5"11 to 6"2.5 range

Ethan muth - 6’5 (claims to be 6’7 but cookie king was just below his eye level meaning it was a 5-6 inch height difference and was a whole 9 inch’s shorter than his brother who claims 7’2 and he looked about 10 inches taller than Dave blunts who I have at a flat 5’7)

Kevin 6'0.25 yeah I see what you’re saying I would say like after 6’3 you start kinda looking un canny anyways my sweet spot would be from 5’11 to 6’2. I know at 5’8 I’m not gonna really face any height discrimination but it’s just I wish I had a little more. Dad’s 5’7 mom is 5’0-5’1 and I’m 19 and went from 5’7 and a half to 5’8 and a 1/8 in a year. So I’ma just keep praying I keep growing when I look at my height growth chat I just never really shot up. But atleast for the most part I have a solid life.

@american guy I love being 6 feet pushing 6’1 because I think im the perfect amount of tall but not too tall now would I wanna be an inch or two taller if given the chance of course who wouldn’t? But I’m pretty content sometimes I feel average of just above average because because I have a tall family and we’re from Sweden plus along with the fact that my little brother is 5’11 and he’s only 14! That definitely dosen’t make me feel tall but since I live in America when ever I hang out with my friends/go out in public I’m usually the top 3 tallest in the room about 90% of the time. I think in America and especially in countries with a shorter average height you at 5’8 (assuming that’s what you measure before bed) that when you would start being seen as average most of the time.

@American guy

I'm not 6'0.5king but just wanted to share my input. Solid is the best word to describe how being 6'0 feels. It's a very solid and comfortable height and I never feel short unless I'm around basketball players. It's easy to find clothes off the rack and I generally don't face any of the inconveniences that very tall people deal with. It's not a towering height, though, so if you want to feel tall all the time it's not enough like I mentioned in my pervious post. But as an introvert who doesn't like standing out, I'm okay with blending in some and not being the tallest person everywhere I go.

Overall, I'm very satisfied with being 6ft even though I think 6'1 might be the ideal height. Honestly, I might even choose 6'0.25 (my current height) over 6'2 if given the choice.

@6 foot man
Yes, people do mean what they say most in most cases, but what you said didn't really make sense.

I wasn't talking about how tall you felt in your lifts. I was referring to your claim about 6'0 being "above average". You said you barely edge out any men at 6'0, so how is that above average then? That really isn't the definition of above average. Above average means you are taller than most adult men, and definitely edge out the vast majority.
I'm guessing you're from somewhere in Europe where everyone are 6'0-6'2 but you have had too much of internet and especially this site that tries to claim everyone are 5'10-5'11. You could always take those internet stats and claims with a pinch of salt.
American guy said on 22/Jul/25

6 foot man said on 22/Jul/25
@ithadtobeyou1924

I meant exactly what I said. 6 foot is upper average and given most men fall within average I’m only slightly taller than the average man, in 1 inch lifts I definitely feel tall, but not huge. It actually feels like the perfect height 6 foot 1. I’ve had several comments that I’m tall by people and I very rarely get that without the 1 inch lifts in. Yes its only 1 inch which can seem negligible but when you’re merely upper/above average that 1 inch can move you into tall territory. 1 inch insoles fit nicely into my shoes and no one can notice and I get a great confidence boost so worth it mine only cost £3

Let’s say that someone first thing out of bed in the morning is 6’0 and 1/8th of an inch when standing tall.

And in the evening they hold a solid 5’11 and 5/8th of an inch. (Maybe very late at night at their absolute lowest they drop down to 5’11.5”.)

Is such a person a candidate for a 5’11.75” listing on your site, or a solid 6’ listing?

Exactly they weren’t designed for it, I think UK homes are getting smaller to meet the needs of a growing population. I live on this really narrow street where the homes are packed in tight. The walls are so thin, you can hear your neighbours make noises like they’re in the same room.

I also moved into a smaller place not far from our old one, my parents are less streamlined with stuff at times. Don’t get me wrong it is usually tidy, still clutter creeps in every now and again. I can tell you’re someone who’s neat, just from how you run this site.
Editor Rob
Yeah, terraced houses are very common and some of the walls really are poor for sound transfer. Eventually we hope to move to a detached house in a smaller/quieter village/town, but that is a good few years away.

Yeah, 6 feet is not tall enough to feel tall all the time. At a solid 6'1 you should feel tall almost anywhere you go. Some may say it's only an inch difference but a 6'1 guy will edge out the masses of 5'11 guys by 2 inches instead of 1 and have the edge on all the 6'0 guys as well, so I believe what you are saying about it being a noticeable height difference.

I usually feel fairly tall at my height but Saturday night at the casino I didn't really. There were a lot of 6'0-6'4 guys out and about. I think I would've felt more comfortably in the lower tall range if I was 6'1.

I measure 6 foot 1 in the morning and 6 foot at night. I decided to see how I’d feel wearing 1 inch lifts. It actually improves my confidence a lot! It feels nice walking around at 6 foot 1. It makes me believe that 6 foot is merely an upper average height wise or above average and 6 foot 1 is the start of tall.
At 6 foot I merely edge out minimally so many other men it feels negligible however with 1 inch lifts its more noticeable.

@Mike190 I get what you mean with needing to assume that everything else is perfect in order to know the ideal. But I think people's expectations from different heights matter always at least a bit, which might bring the ideal to a more modest height. For example, I can't really imagine it to be ideal that Bond or some other main character was 6'5, because just by seeing him, we'd expect him to be slower and less agile than most of the others in the room. Even if he wasn't, that expectation doesn't really change. Also, I think it kind of brings his character out better when we see that there's at least some who are taller.

I think the ideal height -discussion is lacking some perspectives that favour more modest heights. Having a more modest height can sometimes be good as you're less intimidating, easier to approach, even cute lol. These kind of things can make even 5'9 be the ideal in some contexts. But I do think in an overall sense the ideal goes up from that because of physical dominance. I feel like "ideal" should be a height where you're holding a nice amount of all benefits rather than maxing one and not completely lack any specific benefit.

Yes 6'0-6'2 does seem to fit with 5'11-6'3 a wider range ... As proportions and other factors are involved not just the height.

6'4 is just too big and too many issues pop up
Need a height that won't interfere with daily living and at 6'4 it's constant part of you and you make a good point others only may see your height like you're defined by it and can stick out

@Siner739 said on 9/Jul/25

No 6'-6'4 way too big
6'1-6'2 may be a sweet spot even some 6'2 guys look too long for ideal
Almost no one ever at 5'11-6'0.5 ever looks "too long"
So that is why I'm even hesitant sometimes to say 6'2 is ideal
Maybe 6'1-6'1.5 max

Surely you can't think someone like Christopher Lee height (6'4.25 zone) is ideal height
Or Peyton Manning lol

Most days that I go out, the tallest guy I see is usually 6ft 5 range. If I go to a really busy area with tens of thousands of people (big mall, arena, etc) then its not atypical for me to see a 6ft 8 guy. Other days if I'm just at work and only go to the grocery store and post office, I won't see a single person taller than 6ft 3 shockingly.

Overall 188cm is ideal if you value convenience. However I think most men would pick 195cm, myself included. The extra presence that you have at that height is worth the small inconveniences. Yes, most men at that height look "elongated" and too tall as others have mentioned, I agree. However, so does the average 185cm guy. When discussing optimal height, proportions and frame should not be a factor because we are arguing height assuming everything else is perfect.

Even 188cm might feel short at times in the tallest regions of the world, but 195cm is NEVER short or average. That is the benefit of it. You also will be over 6ft your whole life even if you live to become a centenarian.

By mandatory, I mean that it's mandatory to show up for enlistment (cognitive testing, medical assessment, etc.) - at least that's the case in Denmark. Thus, the height data represents virtually all young adults

glouglou237 said on 11/Jul/25
I would say 5"10 to 6"2.5 is a very desirable male height range , especialy that 184 to 187.5 range i think is the most optimal as you stand out in a very aesthetic way and you have a perfect balance beetween everything . At 6"3/6"4 you are over the very desirable range by 1 inch to 2 inches but you are still very close to the ideal . You start to slighty have some negatives effects but it's still minimal and easily manageable . You have a desirable stature but not " very desirable " like 184 cm , 6"0 1/4 / 187.5 cm , 6"1 3/4 . Anything above 6"4 and you are in another league . 6"6 or 6"7 , when you have 4 inches or more on the 6"2 guys , i think you start to have a lot of a height for this world , wich can be fine if you like it . And some negatives effects start to kick in .

Yeah I don't know it for a fact that soldiers would be shorter than average. But I wouldn't be surprised if they are a bit shorter nowadays. To be honest I meant it more for young guys, who are born maybe after 1980 roughly. Because there's just the tendency that the higher educated part of population is a bit taller than lower educated part. If you're coming from a wealthier family, you can spend more years for education before getting a salary job. You're also probably taller, because wealth is in line with good and healthy nutrition. Those from less wealthy family might want to spend less for education and have a salary job sooner, become a soldier for example. Maybe soldier's career used to be closer to average level of education back in the day, but not really anymore. But I honestly don't know if soldiers are shorter now, I just wouldn't be surprised if they are. I definitely don't think the difference is big anyway.

I think both of the studies of soldiers/marines are probably close to true average, maybe it's gone slightly up for younger people as the ones in these studies were born before 1990... not much though. And like you said the ethnic makeup matters there too... but to be honest the percentages of ethnicities seem very close to the ones in the whole country. So decent studies for sure, at least for that age group. I'd still like to see a study done with a variety of occupations as well.

Military service is in theory "mandatory" in Sweden, but only 4-7% of men actually go through it. They assign a certain amount of people to do it, and even if you're assigned, it's very easy to avoid it. In Finland it's much more mandatory, as 70-80% of men do it (I'm Finnish) so I don't know if you mixed those. In Finland, if you don't want to do army, you basically need to have a medical reason or then you do 1 year civilian service with very bad salary or... you go to prison for a while (some actually do that lmao). Actually my last official height measurement was in army health check 9 years ago, so they've got nice height data in army here.
ithadtobeyou1924 said on 10/Jul/25
@Emil Mandatory yes, but the majority of those who go through conscription are those who are positively inclined to do military service. Only a minority of every age group are chosen to do the military service, after they've gone through a military inspection called "mönstring". The ones who want to do it nearly always have a burly and stocky build, both the men and the women.

@c-mo 176-177cm
I'm talking about Sweden, not the US. I don't know how it works in America, but I think you are lucky enough to have a completely voluntary conscription, which means that the soldiers there are definitely not the average people.

I’d say 6’2”-6’4” is probably the ideal height range, at least in the west. I think most men would want to be this height range and also there was a study that found men in this range were most likely to be satisfied with their height. 6’1”-6’5” if you want a broader range but I’d say 6’2”-6’4” is perfect
MatPit said on 9/Jul/25

Yeah when I think about it more I guess it's actually that we don't really need to be taller after a certain point, and maybe that point is 6'0 - 6'2 or something... Just to reach the point where people perceive you always above average. (and after 6'1 I think they do even if you have a few taller people next to you as in real life people still see that you're above average).

I guess it's that 6'3 - 6'5 can be better sometimes as it stands out nicely, but it's exactly this 'standing out' that can also be a bad thing in other occasions, even if you're healthy and good-looking. Optimally you might want to have an opportunity to blend in better, so that people see better the other things in you than the height. Not that they'd only see the height but sometimes I believe it catches a bit more attention than what the tall person would want to.

And like you said the health and aging -factors and also built environment make sub 6'2" heights on average more optimal as well. So yeah roughly 6'0" - 6'2" could be the zone after all.

why would soldiers be shorter than the average population ? that doesnt make any sense . and what about the other study i linked about the US marine corps personnel ? the average height was almost exactly the same in both studies

175.3 and 175.6

and the average heights of both studies are in line with the average height values for USA anyway . not a big difference

the male subjects in the marines study were 58.7 % whites . the male subjects in the soldiers study were 64.85 % whites . if the studies had only whites in it then the average height would have been 177cm or so . which seems like a very realistic noon height measurement for young white men in usa to me

i think 5"10 (178cm) up to 6"2.5 (189.5cm) the stature is very desirable especialy the 184-187.5 zone . You are tall but you're like 3 to 4.5 above average so you stand out but not overly , in an aestetic way . I think much above 6"2.5 like 6"5 or something , it's the point when you start to get a tremendous amount of attention . But here is the thing , the 6"3/6"3.5 ( 191-192) guys they are taller than the 185-187( 6"1./ 6"1.5 ) guys but they don't dwarf them . It's not a brutal height difference . The height is desirable but not very desirable like 184-187 . And it will demand more work on the posture , muscle ect... . Above 6"4 / 193 the height is no more desirable but just "good"up until 203 in my opinion .

Though it's an interesting perspective, 6'4-6'5.5 or whatever can never be "ideal"
It's just too big.

Agreed maybe 6'1-6'1.5 can and as you say other factors in play too facial looks and proportions

Of course there are some men 6'3-6'5 who can pull off but it's just too huge and as c mo said generally other things come up like face not ideal or proportions off
Assuming "hard to pull off" where a 6'4 guy looks pretty good facial-wise and proportion where legs are not too long and torso as well, as well as neck not too long and isn't a gawky/lanky type yeah that's gonna be more ideal than a 5'6-5'7 with an even better face
But a 6'1-6'2 with those exact same features will in my opinion be more optimal.
To me there's no need for "extra inches" past 6'2 zone and definitely not past 6'3

It's hard to pick one height and say this is 100% ideal
So I have a range of 5'11-6'3 with 6'1-6'2 being that (in most cases) most ideal range

Again assuming face is good and proportions decent (not gangly looking or over muscular or legs too long as some men -6'1-6'2 can tend to have issues building muscle and look lanky)

Also the health factor you said 6'3.5-6'5.5 may be ideal in some cases we'll never will be for aging and optimal health
The maintenance one needs to support their body and inconveniences especially over 6'4-6'5 largely outweigh that if a man 5'10-6'2 let's say
Maybe if you make money being a basketball player or something can see how being very tall is good but even so there's a sweet spot there
Like would you sacrifice your life and longevity to be 6'11 basketball player?
I'd rather be a talented 6'4-6'6 basketball player (average NBA height is about 6'5-6'6)so even with that there's a limit
That poor 7'8 kid is not gonna have a good time when hits 30s

Yeah it's kind of harder to believe it immediately when they say that the heights are from a statistical model. But the thing is, they did it because they needed to get also averages for specific ages like 9-year-olds, for which it's understandable that they don't have measurements always. The 19-year-old averages are, in most countries, almost exactly the measured average because for adults they had the measurements available.

Personally I would say that I trust the Lancet study more than the study done with soldiers for a country like USA, because soldiers are not a true representation of the country. You should pick people from various occupations, economic backgrounds etc to get a more accurate average. What is for example the financial background and life experience of someone that decides to become a soldier? I don't know, but it's not the average of the country. I mean the soldiers' average is still definitely interesting and probably not far from the truth, but I'm just saying that most raw average numbers have their flaw too and in a big country like USA I'd trust the Lancet study more because it's based on multiple height-measuring studies.

But for small European countries, I would also rather look at some actual measurements of soldiers, if the Lancet didn't have good measuring data for those. Like you said Bulgaria... if they have wide 95% confience interval in the Excel-file, then yeah it might not be accurate. So I'd look at the 95% values too.

But the thing is, the Lancet study is basically trying to do what we're trying to do here in the comment section, arrive to the best reasonable average with all the data they can find. And they do it for their day job. So for decent size countries, I wouldn't find a reason to deny them. Though for sure, feels nicer to see raw data sometimes.

what do yall think is a height where you start to stand out and people view you as a tall guy always?
Emil said on 6/Jul/25
@Rob

I've noticed that on days where I've slept poorly - after a night out, less than 6 hours of sleep, etc., that I reach my evening lower much quicker than usual. It can take 2-3 hours, if I go for a walk for instance.

On those days, I also wake up at around 185 cm flat; then get down to 183.5-.7 rather quickly. After a good night's sleep I clear 186 cm by a bit, then dip below 185 after 1-2 hours, then dip below 184 after 7-8 hours, my evening low is 183.5-.7 and my extreme low (after a workout) is usually 183.2 cm.

Do you think it's the lack of sleep that makes us shrink quicker or is it because of a lower "out of bed" height that we can get down to our evening low rather quickly?
Editor Rob
Although we do lose height faster in the first couple of hours, your pattern follows what I'd expect.
MatPit said on 5/Jul/25
@c-mo
The heights are actually not averages of measured data, but they are based on a statistical model that uses large amount of measured data and somehow interprets how the heights should be at different ages. But I mean it gets pretty accurate because it relys on the actual measurements whenever they're available. I also feel that it's kind of more convincing to see just average of measured data, but this should get close to the truth. I guess they had to do it that way to get all the ages for all countries for different years.

But anyway, I'd say that it's probably pretty accurate for large countries like USA and large regions like "High income western countries" because they have more actual measurement data to get the averages. You can also see this in the 95% confidence interval that is shown in the columns next to the mean, for USA the lower and upper 95% intervals are only less than 1cm away from the average. For a smaller country like Greece they are almost 2cm away from the average, so yeah for Greece it's less accurate. I was actually also surprised about Greece when I saw it, I initially thought it to be around 176-177cm area... But when I think about it, the young Greek guys that I've met in my uni are actually not short at all. The Rural vs Urban study published in Nature also gave Greece 179 - 180 both urban and rural ...oddly tall. I'm not so surprised about the northern Europe and Balkan though...
Gianni 5' 7 said on 5/Jul/25
@MatPit

I live in North Italy, where the average height of young people is supposed to be closer to the french and british ones. And yet I'm quite sure that, under a stadiometer, there would be more guys who are sub 5ft8 than 6ft and more. It's certainly true that southern italians are shorter, but I can't see a big gap when we talk about gen Z. Overall, I strongly believe that the average height of young north italians is in the 5ft9.25-5 range (afternoon height). As for the south, I would consider half a inch less than that mark, maybe even a full inch for sardinians (I mean, it's certainly not a representative sample, but I know 8 young sardinian men and 5 of them are shorter than me, even if at 5ft7 I'm kinda short!). Having been interested in height for years, I'm quite sure that my conclusions are close to the truth

are the heights measured ? is it measured data ?

many average height values seem pretty high . for example greece at 179.259 cm seems quite high and surprises me. at the same time 174.16 cm for bulgaria is surprisingly low

it seems that for north europe (including parts of central europe . especially ethnic groups that are ethnically "north european" like like germans ) and part of balkans the average height for a young man is around 180 - 181cm evening height

that is a very high average
avi said on 4/Jul/25

That seems to be the case
6'3-6'4 to really start feeling big
And if lot of 6'0-6'1 guys around to feel big then need 6'5-6'6

The goal I think is not to tower it's just to see what height best gives you enough of a solid tall feeling while not looking like overgrown or freakish
or sacrificing ones health and optimal living l
If the goal is to tower then.yeah probably 6'4+
As at that point you are half a foot taller than average 5'10 guys
And though you won't tower 5'11.5-6'1 guys you still are a good bit taller
6'0 guy struggles to each eyebrow area (on average assuming 6'4 has normally top of the head to eyebrow distance to 3.9-4.2 inches)
P
6'6-6'7 be a classic towering height but it comes at a huge cost to the body
Honestly a guy 6'3+ always be labeled the tall guy especially if built where can look even taller so it gets old pretty quick

To C mo's point I think it does matter that at a weak 6'2 you have other guys eye to eye or some random 6'5 guy makes you feel small

I get into to my periods of obsession on this and constantly need to revalidate my height as I feel like "crap I can't be 5'11.8-6'0 if I see these guys 2-3 inches taller quite frequently "
Or
"So and so doesn't look that tall and is around my height is this how I look cause it looks barely 5'11"
Or
"That guy is short he's 5'6 but I don't feel AS tall as I should next to him"

So it's the old compare to others drives me crazy

That's good you're not as obsessed about it

Did you just stop focusing on it altogether or just severely limit?

I feel once you notice heights and get into it it's so hard to not let it come up every second
avi said on 4/Jul/25
@Mike190

That is interesting.

In that case it seems you probably got your expected height or at worst within an inch.

My parents peak 5'1.5-5'1.75 for my mom and my dad was a solidly 5'9 but got down to 5'8 now in his 70s but even 15 yrs again he was 5'8.6-5'8.7 at most he had some health issues last 20 years so "losing" maybe 1.2 inches is not bad
I really don't think he was over 5'9.25 peak
He was a guy who grew to his final height by 16 I think he grew pretty fast.
Your uncles were pretty tall so you probably got it from them
And you have tall females as well it seems

My maternal uncle is also 5'9 and change peak
My paternal ones I was told some 5'11-6'2 even one around 6'3 but that's like 3rd hand info from my grandma.
My paternal grandfather was 5'10.5-5'11 range so maybe I got height from him. He probably was close to his potential as he was from a middle class family

Most women in my family under 5'4 5'2-5'3 is the average
My maternal grandfather is under average

I will say about your peers that may not be able to tell just because you were same height in 3rd grade as some classmate may not grow same height
For the most part the people who were 2-3 inches taller than me (not many) have been that way since
One kid was 6'3 by end of high school he was maybe 2-2.5 taller than me in 5th grade
By 12th grade was almost 5 inches taller than me
So it depends
Other kids were always big and I outgrew
Some were small then caught up

I think for me at around 6'0 with my parents and family history I hit my potential or surpassed maybe a 5'7-5'10 expectation

I was predicted based on age 2 to be 6'1.5 (I was 36.75 inches age 2 so double it for a rudimentary estimation)
But if you use the formula solely based on parents height I come out to like 5'8

so you actually conform to the formula as 67+77 then divide that by 2 and ADD 2.5 inches you get 74.5 which is basically what you got.

Not sure what your height is at age 2 if you have your Dr records can multiply by 2 to see if you come out with 6'2-6'3
MatPit said on 4/Jul/25
It seems like many of you guys end up at 6'0" - 6'2" when thinking about an ideal height, and I kind of agree as I would say 6'1" - 6'1.5". But I hear some of you using arguments like "if you're taller, it's likely that facial aesthetics are not the best", which I think is true. But it makes me think that isn't there then also another ideal, which would be for such case when everything else about the person is ideal too? Because what I think is that there could be an "easiest to pull off" -ideal, which I'd put around 6'1" - 6'1.5". Meaning you're likely to be aesthetically good otherwise too with proportions and face, and also if you don't work out you won't look too lanky or overall big either. Just easiest to pull off.

But then I'd say a height like 6'3.5" - 6'5.5" is kind of even better than 6'1" in the case that you have aesthetic face and also take good care of your health and are about 17-40 years old. It would be harder to maintain the attractiveness with this height and more rare to pull it off, but if you do it's better than 6'1" and if you don't, you'd be better if you could scale yourself down to 6'1". Heights above 6'5.5" in my opinion can't be ideal anyway as then the impracticality reaches a different level and you just don't "need" the extra inches to anything.

So what do you guys think of this idea of two ideals: "easiest to pull off" and "hard to pull off"? Or do you think it's just unnecessary to be massive like 6'4"?

I just have heard that there's a somewhat notable difference between northern and southern Italians northerns being taller and southern plus especially Sardinians being shorter... Maybe you've travelled to areas in UK and France where the average height is below their national average? At least in UK countryside people are 1cm taller than urban people according to a Nature study, in Italy and France it was a bit to opposite direction... But yeah Nature gave just 2.3cm between Italy and Fance so I don't know... I guess it's tricky to calculate an average in a country where there's notable regional differences.

Totally agreed 5'11.5-6'0.5 zone is I feel a similar situation
It's an odd place because definitely not short and definitely over average and sometimes even "tall"
But tall? Not solidly tall like 6'1.5 I think starts to be

The guys you saw maybe still inch shorter or so as it's hard to determine sometimes when someone feels same or taller they actually may be touch shorter due to eye level and judging top of head properly.
but yeah I know what you mean
I see some people my height or within a half inch and then even inch taller and am like "eh that not that tall"
And it feels underwhelming and disappointing
I think we both overestimate how tall 6'0 is
It's just not that big
And at that height won't be MUCH taller than most men
Need to be 6'2 to really start feeling taller
I feel my perception of what 5'11.5-6'0.5 is , is what 6'2 actually is
When I was young I always wanted to be 6'0-6'1 sometimes I even thought 6'0 max because I thought it be too tall being over it.
Nope.
Now that I'm actually about 6'0 it's not what it's cracked up to be

But to c mo's point who cares if someone 6'3-6'4 is taller and you feel decently small next to them?
Proportions, face, build and other things more important
But I think you hit the nail on the head
If one thinks 6'0 is going to be like taller than most or what 6'2 may really be then going to oversell their height and not feel as tall as what their expectations may be

Yes I agree with a lot of points

Not sure Davinci had 5'11 as the model height couldn't find anything online but
the 180cm you mention as being possibly perfect is not that uncommon of an opinion
Models generally between 5'11-6'3
And there was a UK study i think where 5'11 was the ideal height for men and around 5'6 for women

I think 6'1 zone is probably the best

When you describe 184cm which is basically 6'0 it's the same for 6'1

However 187 (almost 6'2) I can definitely see where it can get a little bit too "long" a legit 6'2 can give off lanky appearance especially if thin and proportions not good
Had a coworker family member visit and he was 6'2 maybe 6'2.5 face not good and lanky built looked 6'3-6'4 to someone who not too aware of heights
So he looked gangly not a good look
I'll have to look out more and see if I can spot a correlation of men over 6'0.5- 6'1 like this

So when you make the claims about facial aesthetics having a negative correlation with height I agree somewhat but I don't know if it's THAT prevalent as you may suggest at least not for men 6'1-6'3.5

I do think there's something to it wonder if any research done on it
Probably not much as it can be a contentious thing in stating taller men on average have bad looking faces lol

I don't think at 182-184cm it's as "likely"
Maybe 6'2-6'3 it gets more prominent
My theory some of these guys 6'3-6'4+ have excessive HgH secreated throughout puberty/their life and it went to their faces
Not saying they have undiagnosed growth condition but due to their makeup and effects of HgH can effect face

Feel like 5'11-6'1 not really the case

Also I'm glad you feel solid at your height of 5'9 range that's awesome even Germany
I can't speak to your experience but i was in Poland and I guess I felt ok at 5'11.5-6'0 zone
But remember oti may FEEL that way but that's your perception
I think in Germany average is 5'10.5
Maybe even 5'11 depending where
So really you should see many men 6'0-6'3 (well at least fairly often if you go out) so they be 4.5-5 inches taller than you which is a good difference

See for me at roughly 6'0 if someone is around my height or 1-2 inches taller instantly doubt the average and feel small
S it's all perception

But remember as we both said before it's NOT only the height it's more factors
like honestly proportions may be more important or as important
Because a short leg 6'3 with long torso not look good nor would overly long legged 6'1 guy
So more isn't better for sure
It's a balance and a limit

You say 184cm I'm saying 186-187cm because at between 6'1-6'2 you're pretty much not going to have many men more than 1-2 inches taller
And you are solidly taller than 5'8.5-5'10 average guys

But as you said: "who cares if you look shortish next to a giant ? your height is still more attractive than his anyway"
Totally agree. That's a neat way to put it as I get caught up sometimes feeling down if someone like 6'4 or something 4.2 inches more than me even if he looks like crap
I have to think more like at least I got a cute face and decent proportions LOL
It's not about "mogging" or being taller than 99% of ppl
It's about the overall makeup of your looks and height is just a part of it

@ Kevin 6:

If it makes you feel any better about it I do the same thing and I'm barefoot low height 6 ft 1 and 3/4. Wake up 6 ft 2 1/2.

I'll look at someone, think yeah they're the start of tall but surely I have two inches on them. And then I get close and we are eye to eye I get a little disappointed because their stature is not as impressive as I thought near 6 ft 2 would look and they weren't towering the average guys as much as I thought. I think another illusion is it's easy to think your eye level is above someone's head and actually it isn't - it's easy to get thrown off especially with any distance starting as low as 5 ft for me.

I don't obsess over it so much anymore but I did a few years back. I guess you really need to be a legit 6 ft 4 at your low to really start looking like one of the big guys.

Addition to my last comment. Here: Click Here is a link to data visualizations of the Lancet 2020 study that's more handy for comparisons. Interestingly you can see that for example China has had crazy increase in height seen even between 1995-born and 2000-born adults (1.7cm in men which is a lot in 5 years in so recent years) and 2000-born women in China are already 0.2cm taller than 2000-born women in the US.

Italian young males height in 2019 appears to be 174,5 cm, four cm less than young french and english males. Living in Italy and having been several times in Uk and France, it seems too much a gap to me. From the observations that I've made, at 5 ft7 flat (170 cm on the nose in the afternoon) I'm at 20-22th percentile amongst young italian males, and I would have bet that their average height is no less than 175 and no more than 176 cm. But even when I'm in French or in England, it doesn't seem to me that average height of young people clear the 5ft10 mark. I'd say that young french and british are half a inch taller than young italians, but no more. I'm really skeptical about that 4 cm gap and that makes me wonder about the reliability of the whole Lancet study.

A study published in Lancet 2020 gives an average height of 176.9cm for 19-year-old men in USA in year 2019, which is about 1.5cm above the average of the 2010 study that you linked. Don't know if it's because the soldiers were born earlier than those studied in the Lancet study... the most recent 19-year-old average that the Lancet study gives is for those born in 2000. You can see the data here: Click Here when you go "National" -- "Height" -- "Individual country data" and then you can pick your country to download the Excel-file. I don't know if you guys have already explored these, but I'll give the links in case someone hasn't seen. But it seems like a good study because it's a pooled analysis of 2181 population-based studies worldwide covering 65 million participants. The link to the study itself is here: Click Here
From the first link that I shared you can also choose "Region-Specific data" to see different regions. For example Central and Eastern Europe have average height of 178.3cm for 19-year-old men born in 2000 and "High income western countries 177.7cm, which are close to what you @c-mo 176-177cm estimated to be currently average height for young men in Europe.
You can also choose "Rural & Urban" from the first link to see rural vs urban heights (based on a different study).

Hello Rob,

If I'm 5ft8, and I wore huge lifts which I believe made me around 5'11 when I measured myself with them on? And I went to see a girl with these lifts, and she was wearing very flat shoes, you can somewhat see them in this image although very low quality: Click Here, they seem to hardly add any height.

And under these circumstances, she was above my eye level for sure, top of her head she came up to about my eyebrow level. How tall would you estimate she is?

6'0 can be a weird height in that while it's taller than most (85th percentile in the study c-mo linked), sometimes it just doesn't look that tall. A few days ago I was at a fast food place and stood in line behind a couple guys who were exactly the same height as me. Frankly I was disappointed at how unimpressive their height looked from my viewpoint, because I figured that's how other people must perceive my height.

Also, while in the parking lot I gauged their height while they were walking in and I was still sitting in the car. Even then I remember thinking "they don't look that tall" just to find out they're exactly eye level with me when I walk in there. idk, maybe my expectations for how tall a 6 footer should appear is too high.

A 6'1-6'2 guy will almost always appear noticeably tall. 6'0 not always.

Wow maximum height was only 197.5cm out of 1,301 men. Only 3 guys 6ft 5 range. That just shows you how tall a true 6ft 6 is.

Anecdotally that seems a bit off in my experience. 6ft 5 and change would be more of a 1/200 height (99.5th percentile than 1/1000 (99.9th).

On the other end 151.8cm seems very short for a sample of 1,301. I would've thought the shortest guy would be more like 158cm. I can't remember the last time I ran into a young guy under 160cm, it's quite uncommon.

Are you guys worried being 6'1.5+ will make you look too lanky or throw off your body in some way proportionally?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

well here's the thing :

many men who are around 187cm are already lanky or have bad body proportions or bad face / head aesthetics . of course there are many men at that height who are not like that and look good ...but there are many where these things do apply

the likelyhood for such things already start somewhere around 182-184cm and becomes more and more likely the taller you get .

for example not long ago i said here that i knew a guy who was around 187cm (if i remember right he told me he is 187cm . but it was 15 years ago . but he was around 187cm either way ) who told me that he is too tall . and he was lanky / gawky

obviously if you have good proportions and a good looking face and good head and face size / proportions etc. then 187cm will look phenomenal . and even with bad proportions it is still better than being below 170cm . but as i said before often for me above ~185cm is not perfect anymore as it becomes "too long" vertically . but still up to 194cm is good and up to 203-204cm is decent IMO

the best looking height in my experience is actually 180cm . if there were no people who are 193cm and taller 180cm would be the perfect height . why do i say this ? because a 180cm man will hold his own next to men up to around 6'4 ( unless there are several guys around you at the same time who all happen to be 6'4 lol ) . but people above that height will dwarf a 180cm guy and 6'3 - 6'4 guys will already be strongly taller than you which will make some situations feel awkward. and another thing is that if you are interested in women who are 173cm or taller at 180cm it might get problematic when they wear their 10cm heels .

those are the "problems" that arguably make 180cm not perfect because from a health and aesthetic point of view 180cm is the best in MY experience and opinion . i am around 176cm in the afternoon/evening and "even" at my height EVEN in germany i feel a very decent height and not short . if i was 3-4cm taller to be around 180cm i would feel even more solid . and there is a reason why leonardo da vinci and vitruvius vitruvian man is suppsoed to be 180cm . it is the most attractive height

but the "problems" i listed above about 180cm are the reason why i view 184cm evening height as the perfect height instead because those 4cm more will erase those "problems" mostly . at 184cm you are above average or a little tall and there will be very very rare situations where 184cm will look or feel shortish or something . and who cares if you look shortish next to a giant ? your height is still more attractive than his anyway

so in conclusion 184cm evening height + good looking face + good body proportions + broad shoulders is the best height you can be

henry cavill comes close to this for example . even though in suits he looks a bit odd especially his legs

I had near ideal conditions from birth until about 12 years old. During puberty my sleep and diet suffered, however I think I ended up catching up in my late teens/early 20s when my habits improved. Based on school photos from kindergarden through to adulthood, my height relative to my peers is largely the same thankfully. The strong 6'5 guy that I mentioned was a good bit taller than me in Grade 2 through 6 when we were in the same class so I think I ended up where I'm supposed to be.

Another thing I should mention is both of my parents are somewhat outliers height wise in their families. My uncles on my fathers side range 6'3-4 and aunts 5'8-10. My uncle on my mothers side is solid 5'9.

My paternal grandfather was 6'2, and maternal grandfather solid 5'7. Both of them grew up during WW2 though so I'm sure that effected their growth. However like I mentioned my maternal uncle had near ideal conditions and "only" grew to 5'9, so there is some shorter height in my family without a doubt.

It's interesting on my mothers side, the men and women are almost the same height. My great-grandmother (Born in the 1910's) was 5'7, my grandfather (born 1930's) solid 5'7 and my mother 5'7.

Interesting to see how 6'0 is the 85th percentile, and that 5'10 is 99th percentile for women. Anything above the 84th percentile is objectively tall being 1 standard deviation above the average.

A question for everybody, how common are 6'0+ women where you live? I'm in the US and I reckon only 0.1% of women are 6'0+ and 6'2+ is extremely rare.

I agree that proportions are a large role as I've stated but 187cm is basically a weak 6'2 aka a strong 6'1.5

I think 6'1 will always be chosen over 6'0

I can say from.being 6'0 it's not that tall
Just went to the bathroom at work and two guys around my range possibly 0.5 taller
And another one not far from 6'2

Feel like nowadays need to be 6'2 to really be considered a solid tall

6'0 or even 5'10.5-5'11 is fine
And even 5'9 zone as it's in average range but it's not going to make you feel that tall

I know 5'11-6'2 is a popular modeling height range for men and there's something to be said about 5'11-6'0 being classic and not overly tall where it's difficult to build muscle or less flexibility and also no higher risk of health issues (slightly higher risk for blood clot and maybe cancer but not anything near to 6'2+ or 6'5+)

So there's definitely that argument it may be overall more ideal especially as age to be more average zone

But to me 6'1-6'2 is the range I think where you get to really where the tall zone
But not over do it

Are you guys worried being 6'1.5+ will make you look too lanky or throw off your body in some way proportionally?

At almost 6'3 and your dad dad 6'5
You mom 5'7
That's about right
Had a friend his dad 6'2 peak maybe 6'1.5 lowest..his mom I think 5'4
he was 5'9.5 zone

My mom peak 5'1.75 probably and my dad peak a good 5'9
I am a hair under 6'0
My sister a bit over 5'3.5

So it depends
Maybe you took after a grandfather
Also I think in in Western world we still can miss an inch or two of height potential due to habits during childhood and teen years
I think the effects are not much
Like if someone has potential to be 6'2 they probably will end up 6'0ish even with some bad habits (diet , lack of sleep , lack of exercise during teen yrs and childhood)

I think you are better off 6'2-6'3 zone than 6'5 or something so be grateful for that

so what do you all think about the study i linked you ? 4082 us soldiers being measured . scroll down to see my post about it

i have found another study from usa .

2010 ANTHROPOMETRIC SURVEY OF U.S. MARINE CORPS PERSONNEL .

620 females and 1301 males getting measured :

average height for males in this study is 175.34cm . 175cm = 50 percentile

the ethnic groups of the males :

58.7 % white of not hispanic descent

9% black of not hispanic descent

13.9 % hispanic

2.6% asian or pacific islander

13.6 % two or more groups (mixed people i guess)

and some minor percentages others

most are males below age 40

here i made 2 screenshots of the results for height :

so yeah the average height for the 4082 male us soldiers was 175.62cm and in this study it is 175.34cm

i am assuming in both studies they measured them in the morning or noon ...i mean i dont know maybe they measured them later in the day but i can not imagine that to be the case ...why would they measure them in the afternoon let alone evening ?

i think if it was only whites then the average height would be nearer 5'10 in both studies

probably something like 176.5 - 177cm at night . but probably nothing above that

here in germany average height for young men is something around 179 - 180cm at night . north europe and parts of balkans have average heights for young men in the 5'11 - 6'0 range at night . that is really tall for average heights

i would say for europe AS A WHOLE the average height for a young man is probably around 178cm at night

Was an interesting study, lots of body dimension data in there. Even though 15 years old, I don't think shapes and heights will have changed much in the US during that period. I noticed the difference between Male estimated and measured height was 0.9 inches, which gives you a good idea that the general population inflate their height (or are calling it in shoes). Female over-estimation was 0.5 inches.

@Mike190, unfortunately, it's normal that a son from a tall father (187+ cm) very rarely outgrows his father. If it's a first-born son, then almost certainly never.

So, at very best, with some perfect childhood and adulthood conditions like Ronaldo's son, you might have been 195-196 cm tall.
Mike190 said on 30/Jun/25
Rob, if a father is 196cm and mother is 170cm, what height would you expect their daughter and son to end up?

This is the case in my family, I ended up 190cm and my sister 175cm. Would you say we reached our height potential?

I ask this because I have some acquaintances who are taller than me by a few inches, and yet in alot of cases both of their parents are shorter than mine.

Anecdotally, one thing I've noticed is the height of the mother tends to have more of an effect than the height of the father. All of the very tall men in my highschool cohort (6ft4 and up), have a quite tall mother and above average/tallish father.

The tallest guy in my class of around 200 people was a strong 6ft5, and his mother is about 6ft flat and father "only" 6ft1-2 range. On the contrary I knew a guy whos father is extremely tall at 6ft8 range with a mother who is 4ft11, and he ended up a strong 5ft10.

I'm picking 193cm every day of the week. In all honesty if I had a gun to my head and had to pick a dream height in 5 seconds, I'd say 6ft6. I know its very tall, however at that height I would be certain that I wouldn't regret not picking a taller height. Being too tall is a better problem to have than wanting to be taller. If you're 6ft6 you can wear flats and still be noticeably taller than the average tall 6ft2 guy in airmaxes. You also have the bonus that you will never dip under 6ft even if you live into your 90s or past 100.

If you are doing at least some exercise a few times a week and even basic stretches, you have a very good chance of making 50 with no loss and even age 60 with only a small fraction lost.
Seeing Jenny's height stabilize a bit over the last 4 years (she's well into 50's) shows me a bit of exercise/stretching is very useful in maintaining height.

I based that off of the video where Kanvesky measured him at around 186 cm in shoes - but after watching the stadiometer measurements, I'm convinced he's a solid 6'1 guy. Maybe 6'0.75 at a low at worst, but it's hard to imagine any lower than that. I'm not trying to downgrade anybody. All I had to base his height on previously was just the Kanevsky video with his silly tape measurement method lol

And fair enough, I get your point 👍

However, I live in the Balkans, I'd pick the 190 as an insurance policy not to look short when old age creeps in and national average increases with new generations.

I don't have the celebheights mindset, so I don't think downgrading someone is more "accurate" than overestimating someone, which everyone here seems to be afraid to do. It also seems like people here judge heights based mostly off proportions and not how they look relative to others, which is completely silly. A tall person could have more "compressed" proportions than a shorter person due to head-torso ratio, weight and clothes etc. It wasn't any ad honinem personal to you.

Nike AM 720 or 2090 (4.1 cm) + the lowest level lifts that give 1.7-1.8 cm which effectively give close to 6 cm - surpassing most elevator shoes

A more comfortable alternative would be the NB2090 or 990 series - which I wish Rob would review

I'm just keeping an open mind. And I never said there's a chance Cbum is 6 flat lol. I think he's somewhere between 6'0.75 - 6'1.25 around lunch time on a regular day. Personally, I believe he'd linger around 6'1-6'1 1/8.

I don't think his stadiometer measuremtns are rigged - but I do belive he's close to his out of bed height.

Would appreciate a more civil tone, buddy. No need to throw ad hominems

Hi Big Rob,
Every morning I wake up very close to 186 cm, sometimes even hitting it, but I’d say more like 185.8 cm to be safe and honest. By the evening, just before bed, I measure exactly 184 cm, sometimes 183.8 cm—let’s say between 183.8 and 184 cm.

During the first two hours after waking up, I’m around 185 cm. From the third hour onwards, the drop begins.

With these precise stats, what height do you think I should claim to people or friends?
Editor Rob
It's not an issue if you claim 185cm. If you want to claim a height that you don't fall under, then 184 is an option. In either case, you are going to rarely find someone who thinks you are lying. Most would think of you as honest, a good proportion being surprised and insist you must be taller than your claim.

I'd go with your stadiometer measurements if I were you. I was measured 183.5 cm in a hospital recently, after having been awake for 30 hours lol. I hadnt done much physical stuff, though, but I think I was close to an absolute low

@EditorRob If my height drops down to just below 5'7.25 on my worst day(170.6cm) and
If I'm staying all home all day, I think I measure around 171cm easy at the end of the day, (although sometimes I do feel it's right at 5'7.25 at night if I move around a bit throughout the day)

What would I be listed as on Celebheights? At 5'7"? Would I and Tom Cruise have a noticable difference? I just wonder, at what point does the height difference begin to show.
Editor Rob
You could end up looking over 5ft 7 with other celebs, so a greater chance of 5ft 7.25. If you actually claimed something like 'just over 5ft 7', and looked at least that range I might go with that mark too.
ithadtobeyou1924 said on 27/Jun/25
@Emil
To be honest, the 6ft flat estimation was kind of ridiculous too. Very celebheights of you. 6'0.75 is unlikely too, given his 6'1.5 measurement. 6'1 in the evening after a long day is possible I suppose, but more likely slightly over it, if we are actually talking about what he would measure at a stadiometer and not the "vibes" his body proportions give off.

Hey Rob, Guys who are listed 5’11 3/4 on this site like drake, William Fichtner, Christian Bale, and 50 cent. What would there low heights be in the evening for them? 5’11 1/2 roughly?
Editor Rob
Yes, at 10pm those guys could be measuring around 11.5.

In order to estimate what I'd be listed at here if I were a celebrity, is measuring myself barefeet a stadiometer in the evening, then substracting 3cm from that number a good thumb of rule?
Editor Rob
If a celebrity sends me a height they measured alongside a 3-figure donation, they get listed at that.
A 4-figure donation would guarantee an extra inch 😗 However, that option comes with an annual height retention fee of £99.99, which is a bargain really and gives the celebrity peace of mind that they'll never shrink...also, it's Tax deductible too!

Jokes aside, I've been measured at around 185.5cm in the evening barefeet on two(!) different hospital stadiometers, by myself at home at around 184cm, and yet I look exactly the same as the men listed at 5'10 and 5'11 on this site. I'm not muscular or fat.
Editor Rob
I've read similar situations on here over the years - people questioning what height they really are when they are getting one figure at a clinic and another figure at home.
I would say that if you are confident that the floor and walls are straight and you take time to measure (even doing on different parts of a wall), a home measurement can be quite accurate.

@Emil And yet a lot of people on the internet go on about how he's got to be 5'11 or 6'0. There is probably a ton of celebrities on this site listed as 6'0 who are probably more like 6'1-6'2 in reality.

@ithadtobeyou1924
6'0.75 for Cbum is possible later in the day imo, but 5'11 is ridiculous, I agree

On that note, I think Rob's listing are always on point or at least very close. But yea, there are some pretty petty people in the comment section. Height insecurity seems to roam around the site.

so 175.5cm is the 50 percentile . the mean is 175.62cm

if i am not wrong 64.85 % of the soldiers in this study were non hispanic whites and most are younger than age 40

i dont know if they were measured in the morning but i can imagine it to be earlier in the day because why would they do it in the evening ? lol ..i mean maybe they did i dont know but i cant imagine it to be the case .

What percentage of women are taller than 6'0? Tall.life calculator says about 1 in 500 but it seems like much less than that IRL. I would estimate it to be 1 in 1000 at most. I see more 6'5-6'6 men than 6'0 women.

177.6-178cm range would be a quite typical zone for a man who is 190cm range.

Rob, is there any truth to the idea that we tend to overestimate other people’s heights and think they are taller then they really are due to the fact that our eye level is 4-5 inches below our head and we can see others heads but not our own.
Editor Rob
I'm not sure about that - I think most folk are either using their own eye-levels against others, or are able to see someone standing beside another person whose height they might know.

I can buy a bit over 6ft for him, but that's really the most.
Emil said on 25/Jun/25
@Rob

The inversion table/lying down before the measurement theory sounds plausible, but I doubt he'd had regained more than a quarter inch doing that. So, all things considered, I think a 6'1 on the nose listing (lunch time) is fair enough.

@Siner739

Yea, I've seen that photo where the difference between Laid and Cbum looks staggering- but I think it's due to the camera angle and the lense.

This picture seems to represent their height difference a bit better

Considering Cbum is wearing 0.7 in Converse, Laid is barefoot, and standing a bit behind, I think 6'1 for Cbum and 6'2.5-6'3 seems reasonable for David Laid.

Gotta love this debate, it's turned into a true height saga 😆

Rob, is 5'10.5 a fair claim if measuring in at 178.8cm a little over four hours out of bed?

If you went for an 11am Doctor's appointment, you would likely get around that and be recorded as such in your notes. So, yes, go for that claim.

Hi Rob, what would the low be for someone listed 5’10 1/2?

I’m talking about guys like Micheal B. Jordan, Andrew Garfield, Pedro Pascal, Jamie Dornan and KSI?

I don’t think they’d drop much under their listing. Would it be fair to say they probably at their low would be slightly under their listing at like 5’10 3/8? Do you think this is fair to say?
Editor Rob
Some of these guys might end up not falling below 3/8ths, others could at worst fall to 10.25.

Rob, my mom is in her early 60s. I truly believe she has lost height since she can't stand quite straight anymore, about a year ago I have measured her at 5ft 2.625, lowest Ive seen from vague memory (All I remember maybe solid 5ft 3 range roughly a decade ago). What kind of conjecture youd give with what her peak height couldve been?
Editor Rob
I suppose 5ft 3.5 is a possible range, but it's really hard to tell precisely.
I know my Mother managed to make it to early 60's maybe with an inch of loss but through her 70's (she's now 80), she's down to 5ft 2 from a peak of 5ft 5.

@Siner739

Most of the comic book characters were created in the late 1930s (Superman 1938, Batman 1939, etc.) The average ~40yo man at that time (born in 1900) was 170cm. Now the average ~40yo man (born in 1980) is 179cm. That's a substantial increase if you ask me.

Let's be conservative. Average man in the USA that was 18-20 years old when the comics were created was 173cm (born 1920).

179cm/173cm = 1.03468208092

Batman: 188cm x 1.03468208092 = 194.5cm or 6ft 4.5

Superman 190.5cm x 1.03468208092 = 197.1cm or 6ft 5.5

Height would be even higher if I used the 1900 avg height. I'm not sure where you're getting your stats from but there was a substantial increase in height in the first world between the late 1800's the until the 1980s. Now the height gains seemed to have tapered off, but are still increasing dramatically in developing countries.

Do you think Jordan Barrett got limb lengthening? The fact that he grew easily 3 inches in his mid 20s is wild to me. Unless he's 1 in a million it doesn't make sense to me how he went from barely 5ft11.5-6ft to ~6ft3 at 25yo.
Mike190 said on 24/Jun/25
@Rob

Bumstead admitted that he used inversion tables before the official Mr. Olympia height measurement. It's very important to measure a certain height since it limits your max weight for the classic physique competition. He had to measure OVER 6ft 1 and up to 6ft2 to meet the 242lb cap. In fact at one point his goal was to measure over 6ft2 so he could weigh 249lbs but clearly he wasn't able to achieve that. Bumstead knows that he typically measures under 6ft 1, that's why he claims 6 foot.

I think he was close to his out of bed height by that stadiometer, and ironically the Eric Kanevsky video with the tape measure in shoes paints a better picture of his lunch-time height. I give him 6ft 1/2inch
Editor Rob
If he really did use it before heading down for a measurement, it would suggest he's not far from his morning height then...
Emil said on 24/Jun/25

One last clip, and I'll put it on hold lol.

Cbum was also measured 6'1.5 at the 2022 Olympia weigh ins.

He's measured around 17:40. Can't really see the lines though.

At 18:35 Cbum asks if he is 6'1 or 6'2, to which the official replies "6'1.5"

Looks like a solid good ol Seca 213 - I reckon it can't be too off 😉?
Editor Rob
If he's clearing 6ft 1 on that device too, then it's looking likely he is over 6ft 1! Now he could have pulled a Big G and lay down before a measurement, which could explain why in the Eric video he wasn't 6ft 2 'in sneakers'...You can see him I think 2024 with Arnie in what looks probably similar posture and footwear.

Interesting seeing the second angle to the measurement. That platter is very wobbly, but I believe it was clear that it's close enough to 186.5cm (about 6ft 1.4).

So if this were earlier in the day he's got to be 6ft 1.25 at lunch

@Rob

Yes, I always thought he'd be closer to 6 foot flat, but I guess this verifies that he's actually in the 6'1 range. Are you thinking of adding Cbum to the site, or would you need more proof?
Editor Rob
It was clear enough to me he cleared 186cm that moment, so I think as a lunchtime height 1.25 is fair enough. I will give him a page.
However, that youtuber Kanevsky held the tape beside him at 6ft 1 range (in a sneaker), so I don't know!

@Editor Rob

Kanevsky measured Larry Wheels in shoes at 6'1.5 with his method. I'm not sure if you can take it at face value

Editor Rob
I just commented on that in the previous one, I believe in sneakers beside the tape he was a bit over 6ft 1, how much is hard to tell.

It's a strange one.

I cannot for the life of me see how at that moment Chris is less than 186cm. However, there is the chance a stadiometer does have an error...that's something that can't be dismissed.

Not a big shrinkage, you could get 5ft 8 or 8.25 listing.
